The Cotopaxi National Park is one of the main natural protected areas of Ecuador. The whole area is an ideal attraction for nature lovers.

It is located in the provinces of Cotopaxi, Napo and Pichincha with an extension of 36,000 hectares (88,920 acres).

The Cotopaxi National Reserve is the ideal attraction for nature loving visitors.

The National Park has beautiful Andean landscapes, and its main attraction is its majestic Cotopaxi volcano.

Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano of the world (5,897 meters above sea level) and it is also considered Ecuador's most spectacular volcano.

In native language, Cotopaxi means Neck of the Moon. You can also observe the surrounding volcanoes such as the Sincholagua, RumiƱahui and Morurco.

This lagoon, located at the foot of the imposing mt Cotopaxi, is an excellent site for bird watching and observing the volcanic landscape.

Animal species found in the area are: wolves, bears, rabbits, pumas, skunks, wild horses, muskrats, and a wide variety of birds such as:

Carunculated Cara Caras or curiquingues, owls, Andean gulls, Highland quails, quilicos a small falcon (falco sparverious) and the great Condor of the Andes.

Due to the cold climate that usually surrounds the National Park, the vegetation presents characteristics of a moorland ecosystem.

In the lower zone you find beautiful and extensive pine wood forests, pumamaqui bushes, native of the Andes.

Capuli which is an Andean cherry, gentians, blueberries and other native plants like quishuar, valeriana, romerillo and quinua.

In the higher areas there are chuquirahuas (Chuquiragua jussieui), ishu straw and lichens.
