The Avenue of the Volcanoes

Its volcanoes, and accompanying seismic activity, have defined its history in many ways.



Chimborazo Volcano in Riobamba City is known by the local Indians as "Taita," (meaning father). It is the farthest point from the earth's center (due to the bulge at the equator).

Towns such as Latacunga and Riobamba south of Quito have been founded and re-founded over the centuries as a result of earthquakes and lava flows.

You can climb up to its breath-inhibiting refuge at 4,800 m (15,744 ft), within a fauna reserve peopled by shy vicuña.

Cotopaxi Volcano, is one of the best Ecuador tourist attractions. You can drive through the wild and beautiful Cotopaxi National Park up to the parking lot on the mountain itself at 4,600 m (15,332 ft).

Carihauirazo Volcano (16,466 ft) challenges even the most experienced mountaineers.

Altar Volcano is one of the three volcanoes located in the Sangay National Park.

Tungurahua Volcano is famous for its constant volcanic activity since 1999.

Most visitors are delighted to look at it from the Town of Banos with its almost every night firework explosions.

Otavalo is currently considered one of the most important tourist attractions in Ecuador.

This is due to its ancestral cultural heritage, enriched by millenarian traditions, myths, legends and customs together with Andean landscapes of outstanding beauty: mountains, lakes, waterfalls and rivers.

Cuenca City

Its buildings have a well preserved colonial look with colorful balconies.

The city's incredibly preserved history, recently earned the honor of being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Latacunga City

The town is famous for its Mama Negra celebrations during September of each year.

It is a good starting point for some interesting excursions such as to the Cotopaxi volcano.

The February Carnival celebrations are the most traditional and last for up to a week.
