Information About the Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are located 600 hundred miles west of the country of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean in South America.

The total land area is 7,882 square kilometers within a marine reserve of 45,000 square kilometers. The Archipelago consist of 61 Islands and islets, with 13 main Islands.

The main 13 Islands are: Baltra, Espanola, Fernandina, Floreana, Genovesa, Isabela, Marchena, Pinta, Pinzon, San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe and Santiago.

The Galapagos Islands belong to the country of Ecuador since 1830. The Galapagos National Park was established in 1959 covering 90% of the Galapagos Archipelago.

The Galapagos park service was started in 1967 until today. Also the Galapagos Marine reserve was open in 1999 to preserve the marine animals in the sea near Galapagos.

The Galapagos Islands are the only place on Earth where animals like: birds, reptiles and Giant tortoises, show total lack of fear to humans. These animals are indeed very friendly and consider you as part of their environment.
