Independent Visit to San Cristobal Island

by Janice
(ottawa, KS usa)

In 1997 we visited the island. My husband worked for a company who retrieved the wreckage of a 727 on the runway there. I visited there at the end of his work assignment.

We would like to visit again but would like to come without being part of a tour group. Is this possible and where do we start to make these plans? We thought we needed sponsors.

We flew from Guayaquil before and would like to do that again. I am not so concerned about flights and hotels as I do not have any problems with visiting without a tour sponsor, etc.

Your Answer

I work mainly with cruises and Land Tours on Galapagos Santa Cruz Island with visits to nearby Islands.

But the Galapagos National Park has an office on San Cristobal Island that offer good information to visitors so it is easy to explore if you are on your own.

There are direct flights (Either on TAME or AeroGal national airlines) that go from Quito or Guayaquil to San Cristobal Island.

San Cristobal Island has improved over the time and has good communications, Internet, fresh water, a hospital, good hotels, etc.

Once you arrive to San Cristobal the first thing you'll have to do is find a hotel and then you can move around the Island as you please.

Recommended Sites To Visit

Punta Pitt: is a site located north-east of the Island. If you like hiking then this is the place. It is a good place birdwatching too.

La Loberia: Is a beach located 10 minutes away from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (the capital city). In this beach you will find a large colony of Sea Lions resting all across the beach.

Lobos Island: It's a peaceful small Island separated by a channel from San Cristobal Island. It is a great place for snorkeling.

Frigate Bird Hill: It is a hike of about 1 km from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Once at the top of the hill you can enjoy an incredible view of white beaches.

Kicker Rock: It is located out of San Cristobal Island. A site in the middle of the sea composed by 2 vertical cone shaped lava rocks with a height of 145 mts from the Ocean.
