Baquerizo Moreno is the Capital City of the Galapagos Islands and it is located on the eastern side of San Cristobal Island.

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the second largest settlement area in the Islands with more than 5,000 inhabitants. In past times (more than a hundred years ago) it was a penal colony.

The city has an important communications infrastructure, where some Internet cafes, can give you contact with the world.

If you like surfing, then Punta Carola beach is a good location to practice this sport. If you just want to swim try further north to Mann beach through Northia Avenue.

Nearby is Oro beach you can find some hotels to spend the night.

Cerro Tijeretas is a site worth visiting. You will have the opportunity to see a variety of Frigate birds nesting and hovering around the cliff overlooking the.

To the south of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is La Loberia which is a bay area covered in rocks where you will see several sea lions, marine iguanas and abundant bird life and further along the cliff face are rays and Giant tortoises.

You can also visit the Galapagos National Park Interpretation Center, which was Inaugurated in 1998.

Here you will learn about the History of the Galapagos Islands and biological interpretations with examples. It is located on the northeast side of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.

The Galapagos National Park's excellent new exhibition center displays cover everything from geology, climate and conservation, to attempts at colonization in the 1920s, and have detailed explanations in Spanish and English.

Impressive installations include a hold stuffed with overturned giant tortoises as they would have been stored by the pirates and whalers.

Visit also La Galapaguera which is a place to understand the natural history of giant tortoises.

Also the provincial chamber of tourism (CAPTURGAL) is located on Malecón Charles Darwin. They provide a good information of all services in town.

Diving

There are several diving sites around San Cristobal Island. The most visited ones are Roca Ballena, Punta Pitt and Galapagos Kicker Rock

Surfing

The best season for Galapagos Surfing activities in San Cristobal Island is between December to March of each year. The best surfing beach is Punta Carola close to town.

Also, if you happen to go during the second week of February, there is a surf competition which is held alongside the local festivities.

Biking

You will have ample opportunities to practice mountain biking in Galapagos. Most local travel agencies will rent you mountain bikes for as little as $1.00 an hour.

The beautiful nearby beaches are also a highlight and it's a must to visit them. Some of the recommended ones are Las Tijeretas, Punta Carola and Playa Cabo de Horno.
