The Galapagos sprouted out of the Pacific Ocean from a sub oceanic lava vent on the ocean floor. This same process created the Hawaiian Islands, and it continues today in both Island groups.

Geologically these Islands are situated on one of the most active volcanic regions on Earth: the Nazca Plate. Geographically even though they are in the tropic, the Galapagos are fortunate, since, they are not in the path of big storms or phenomena like that.

The Galapagos Islands are a Province of Ecuador and are part of the Galapagos National Park system. The main language on the Islands is Spanish. The Galapagos have a population of around 20,000.

The Islands are geologically young and famed for their vast number of endemic species, which were studied by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. His observations and collections contributed to the inception of Darwin's theory of Evolution by Natural Selection.

Besides knowing where is Galapagos, its is important to know that this Archipelago is best known for its amazing array of endemic species. The plants, invertebrates and vertebrate species have evolved over time due to isolated Island life.

Endemism is high in all living organisms on these Islands from lichens, flowering plants, insects and land snails to finches, giant tortoises, iguanas and rats.

Charles Darwin first studied the wildlife of the Islands taking note of the evolution of the land birds such as the Galapagos Finches and mockingbirds that adapted to a specific niche in the available habitat. The Galapagos are a natural, living laboratory with minimal human disturbance.

The Galapagos Islands offers world travelers a way to step back in time, visiting a quite untouched place on Earth. This paradise is ideal for those who want to go away from all, and enjoy natural history and wildlife.

Blessed by their isolation from the mainland and their equatorial location, the Galapagos Islands are beautiful all year round, making it so there is no single time of year that is better than another for visiting.
